Lolita’s Personality

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They require 2 to 3 hours per day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They love visiting parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make wonderful pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a nuisance to those who live near. They can be heard making loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in condos and apartments or near children who may be frightened by their noise.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to go back to the sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, promised to develop a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the actual ocean and not a concrete tank.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and bond with their family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

This module is accompanied by the manual as well as DVD of Lolita teaching the Method for your own practice.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

They have shown that she is aging rapidly and that her health is deteriorating.
It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor is not required to share this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play a role in the deaths of orcas in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal issue.
